Orchard Road Food: Tenjin Tempura Worth the Crunch

Crunch, Dip, Repeat at Tenjin Shaw Centre

Need a crispy reset after battling the Orchard Road crowds? Tenjin at Shaw Centre keeps things satisfyingly simple: golden tempura, fluffy Japanese rice and generous bowls made for people who believe “just one more prawn” is always a good idea.

Part of the Les Amis Group, Tenjin is a smart-casual Japanese restaurant specialising in tempura donburi, better known as tendon. Seafood and vegetable tempura are served over Hoshi-Jirushi rice from Ibaraki Prefecture, with regular or spicy tare bringing everything together.

A quick location update before you follow old directions: although Tenjin previously operated from #01-11, the Tenjin official website and Shaw Centre directory currently list it at #03-08, Shaw Centre, 1 Scotts Road.

Menu Highlights: Bowls Piled High with Crunch

Come for the golden tempura, stay for the full Japanese spread - and possibly one more prawn.

Tenjin’s menu is focused rather than overwhelming - which helps when hunger has already destroyed your decision-making skills.

The Special Tendon Set, or Jo (S$18++), is the strongest first-timer pick. It comes with two prawns, five kinds of vegetables, an ohba leaf, a freedom-range egg and rice.

For a fuller seafood spread, the Premium Tendon Set, or Tokujo (S$27++), brings snow crab leg, anago, two prawns, kisu fish, vegetables, an ohba leaf and egg. It arrives looking as though the tempura is attempting a prison break.

Prawn loyalists can choose the Ebi Tendon Set (S$22++), stacked with five prawns, vegetables and egg. The Yasai Vegetable Tendon Set (S$15++) offers five kinds of vegetables, with two pieces of each, making it the lightest and most affordable option.

All tendon sets come with miso soup and kyabetsu cabbage salad. Prices on the current Tenjin dine-in menu are subject to service charge and prevailing government taxes.

Rice Bowl or Noodles?

The Tempura Moriawase Set (S$28++) serves the seafood and vegetable assortment separately with tentsuyu, rice, miso soup and salad. Pick this when you want to control every dip and keep the batter crisp for longer.

The Inaniwa Udon Set (S$28++) comes with a similar tempura assortment and a choice of hot or cold udon. Recent diners have been especially complimentary about the cold noodles’ pleasantly chewy texture.

For a side, the Truffle Chawanmushi (S$6++) is an easy add-on. The steamed egg is frequently described as smooth and silky - a soft little holiday between all that crunch. Ice cream and yuzu sorbet are also S$6++.

Ambience and Service

Tenjin’s interior leans minimalist, with raw concrete, light timber and bamboo pendant lights creating a warm Japanese-inspired space. It feels polished without becoming formal - ideal for a solo lunch, casual catch-up or pre-movie meal.

Recent diners often praise the attentive staff, comfortable atmosphere and straightforward QR ordering. Several also noted that the ventilation is effective, so you can enjoy deep-fried food without leaving Shaw Centre smelling like you personally climbed into the fryer.

Tenjin is walk-in only and does not accept reservations. Its menu also states a minimum order of one set per guest and a one-hour dining limit, so this is more “crunch and carry on” than “three-hour life update.”

What Recent Reviews Say

The overall feedback is positive, but not blindly glowing - which is exactly how we like our reviews.

Many late-2025 and 2026 diners praised the tempura for being light, crisp and not excessively greasy. The cosy setting, friendly service and generous variety of toppings also appeared repeatedly. A March 2026 Google-sourced review highlighted well-fried tempura and enjoyable cold noodles.

The less-crispy side? A smaller number of reviewers found some dishes oily, dry or too heavily sauced. One April 2026 diner thought the prawn was overcooked and rubbery, although the same review praised the udon. Others felt the rice portion was modest or that prices were less appealing without a promotion.

And a warning for anyone who treats “spicy” as decorative: Tenjin’s spicy tare can deliver real heat. Start carefully. You can always add more sauce; you cannot un-spice your tongue once it files a formal complaint.

When to Visit

Tenjin opens daily for lunch from 11.30am to 3pm, with last orders at 2.30pm, and dinner from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, with last orders at 9pm.

It suits quick Japanese lunches, solo diners, couples, small groups and pre-movie meals. Arriving outside the main lunch rush may make the walk-in experience smoother.

Orchard Foodies Take

Tenjin knows exactly what it wants to be: straightforward tendon, plenty of toppings and enough crunch to rescue a tiring shopping day.

The Jo Set looks like the best all-round choice for first-timers, while the Tokujo is for appetites with main-character energy. The Moriawase Set suits serious crunch preservationists, and the truffle chawanmushi is the soft, savoury sidekick your fried feast deserves.

Is every review perfect? No. Concerns about oiliness, sauce and prawns appear occasionally. Still, the central location, cosy setting, focused menu and generally positive recent feedback keep Tenjin firmly in the conversation among Orchard Road Restaurants.

Our tip? Order the Jo, test the spicy tare before pouring with confidence, and save room for dessert.

Stay crispy till next time,
